Timur Bekmambetov Added To Director Shortlist For 3D 'Oz The Great And Powerful' With Robert Downey Jr. Circling
6/01/2010
Eager to replicate the head scratching $1 billion dollar success of their revamped "Alice In Wonderland," earlier this spring Disney set into motion "Oz The Great And Powerful" and prequel of sorts to "The Wizard Of Oz." Robert Downey Jr. soon began circling the the lead role of the wizard and directors Sam Mendes and Adam Shankman joined a shortlist of potential talent to helm the film.
Well, no one is officially on board yet, the list of talent considering the project grows as according to Deadline, Timur Bekmambetov ("Day Watch," "Wanted") has now joined the shortlist. The director has been searching for a project ever since "Wanted 2" fell apart and has been attached a handful of projects including "Red Asphalt," "The Witch Hunter" and "Moby Dick."
"Oz The Great And Powerful" takes place about 50 years before the events in the original film and seems decidedly darker than that family friend tale. Here's the Production Weekly rundown of the film:
Based on one of the many Frank Baum books, and a prequel to the Wizard of Oz, but told from the wizard’s point of view when he first enters Oz, 50 years before Dorothy. The Wizard is a young womanizing con artist who arrives in the land of Oz accidentally, and is mistaken to be a Wizard, playing along hoping to reap the riches of Oz, only to be thrown into a civil war of a royal family of three young women who later become the witches – 2 evil and 1 good.
PW also reports that Disney is looking to fast-track the film, and hopes to get it in front of cameras as early as next spring with a 3D shoot in mind (duh, of course). However, if Bekmambetov doesn't get the gig, he's also circling directorial duties on a film version of Disney's "Jungle Cruise" ride (barf). That project was announced back in February as one of the tentpoles of Disney's new "franchise only" production schedule, but Bekmambetov's name is the first to surface as a potential director

»Pajiba is reporting that Drew Barrymore has resurrected Surrender Dorothy for a possible follow-up to her directorial debut Whip It. This Wizard of Oz sequel was first announced in 2002 with a script by hot shot Zach Helm (who has become known as the mainstream version of Charlie Kaufman, with Stranger Than Fiction and Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium) and with Barrymore originally set to star. The project has been in development since 1999, with producer Robert Kosberg (12 Monkeys).« — [Källa]

'Deus Ex: Human Revolution': the next big movie?
June 08, 2010
Feast your eyes on the trailer for video game "Deus Ex: Human Revolution," the third game from Ion Storm and Eidos Interactive.
This is one game that has Hollywood a-buzzing this week, and here's why:
1) It combines ideas and aesthetics from "Blade Runner" and "Robocop" to create a really evocative future and showing things we've not seen before. Forget about the cyborg technology -- check out that one head-spinning scene in the trailer!
2) Story, story, story. This thing actually has a well-thought-out and deep story that seems to go beyond your average video game and helps create a tangible world with social problems while giving us an interesting protagonist.

Jessica Simpson to Play Samus Aran in Upcoming Metroid Movie
It's early on a Saturday and it looks like the crazies are already coming out. It appears that there is a rumor going around that Jessica Simpson, the former Nuclear Scientist and MIT graduate (j/k), is slated to play Samus Aran in the upcoming Metroid movie that is supposedly directed by Uwe Boll?
Look, as cool as it would be to have a new Metroid movie, this is doubtful for so many reasons. Simpson isn't exactly a great actress and Uwe Boll is a complete idiot when it comes to realizing video games on the silver screen (or DVD in most cases). On top that, wouldn't Nintendo actually tap some people with talent to make a film based on a major franchise? We remember the rushed Christmas flop known as the Super Mario Bros. Movie.
But for kicks, here's what the rumor states:
"Actress Jessica Simpson is rumored to have secured the role of Space Bounty Hunter Samus Aran in a Hollywood version of a Nintendo game. In the game, Metroid, the hero controls Samus on her goal to rid the world of energy sucking beasts called Metroids. Think of it as a cross between Aliens and Dracula.
Simpson is excited to restart her movie career and is reportedly taking part in the selection of Samus' love interest. Simpson's publicists has also confirmed that she will be contributing to the plot. "Ms Simpson feels the plot is too complex and would like to move the plot closer to it's core story of love and adventure.
The movie, rumored to be directed by famed director Uwe Boll will feature a wise cracking ethnic Metroid played by the fat kid from good burger."

Got a scoop from a well trusted source that Marvel/Disney are looking at doing 10 minute short films in front of their feature length movies that will introduce secondary characters like Black Panther, Luke Cage, Dr. Strange, etc.

Producer Marco Morabito Says 'Suspiria' Will Shoot In 2011, And No, Marilyn Manson Won't Be In It
When we spoke with David Gordon Green at SXSW earlier this year, he snorted when we told him that IMDB had "Suspiria" listed in pre-production saying, "Oh, great, I'm glad to hear that. As soon as the check clears all those movies are happening. I'm going to be really busy for the next 48 years."
Well, it looks like it might be closer to happening than we think. Italian producer Marco Morabito says (BadTaste. via Twitch) that Dario Argento has finally given his blessing to the project (he holds the rights to his film) saying that he is "convinced that his movie is a masterpiece and can't be overshadowed."
Don't bother reading the BadTaste google translation from this Italian site, it's near incomprehensible gibberish, but three things seem clear, at least according to this producer, 1) "Suspiria" is shooting next year, 2) David Gordon Green is directing and 3) rumors that Marilyn Manson would have a supporting role are false.
However, Green is becoming a busy man and is shooting the "The Sitter" with Jonah Hill in the fall, and then his latest picture, "Your Highness" arrives April 8, 2011 (he called it his "toughest film to shoot," and it was delayed, originally set to come out this October). Apart from fine-tuning the latter and doing press and then shooting and editing "The Sitter" we're not convinced "Suspiria" will actually shoot next year just because the producer says so. He's also got a million projects in the works (including "Taking Flight," an MTV animated series, "Free Country," "Battling Boy" and maybe, one day, "Freaks Of The Heartland" which was basically halted by Overture for now), plus all the Rough House Pictures projects he's developing. While a DGG-directed "Suspiria" remake sounds great, we would imagine his next move after "The Sitter" is definitely TBD at the moment.
Dario Argento Gives David Gordon Green a Thumbs-Up for Suspiria Remake
July 15th, 2010
What’s going on with David Gordon Green’s proposed remake of the Dario Argento horror classic Suspiria? We first heard about the film almost two years ago, and there were rumors not long ago that the film would shoot this year. But we haven’t heard much about the remake since people hit Green with questions while on the set of his latest film Your Highness.
Turns out the holdup may have been with Argento, who held the rights to his original film.
Bad Taste, via Twitch, reports that Argento has finally released the rights to Green. Why did Argento finally fork over the rights? Because, according to producer Marco Morabito, he is “convinced that his movie is a masterpiece and can’t be overshadowed.”

Vad sägs om en sensuell lesbisk varulvsfilm? Intressant?
"Jack (Thirlby) and Diane (Temple), two teenage girls, meet in New York City and spend the night kissing ferociously. Diane's charming innocence quickly begins to open Jack's tough skinned heart. But, when Jack discovers that Diane is leaving the country in a week she tries to push her away. Diane must struggle to keep their love alive while hiding the secret that her newly awakened sexual desire is giving her werewolf-like visions."

»Kylie Minogue will play a heavily tattooed lesbian in "Jack and Diane," which stars Juno Temple and Elvis Presley's granddaughter, Riley Keough, as teen lovers. A source told us, "Kylie does have one love scene where she kisses a girl. Her fans will be surprised to see her in this role, but her performance is good." Pop star Kylie, who shot to fame in the Australian soap "Neighbours," has not appeared in a movie since 2001's "Moulin Rouge."« — [Källa]
