Red Sonja Rides Again

Millennium Films and Emmett/Furla Films are bringing sword-and-sorcery comic-book heroine Red Sonja back to the big screen, Variety reported.

Avi Lerner and Danny Dimbort's Millennium will finance and produce the movie with Emmett/Furla. The project's budget is north of $25 million

Millennium and Emmett/Furla picked up the film rights from Red Sonja, home of the comic-book property. Last year, Dynamite Entertainment launched a new Red Sonja series that has gone on to be one of the best-selling indie comic books on the market.

Red Sonja, created by sword-and-sorcery legend Robert E. Howard, was introduced into Marvel's Conan the Barbarian comics in 1973 and soon was given her own title.

The 1985 Red Sonja pic, starring Brigitte Nielson and Arnold Schwarzenegger, was released by MGM to dismal box-office numbers.

Rodriguez and McGowan Team for Red Sonja

According to USA Today, real-life couple director Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan are teaming up to bring Red Sonja back to theaters.

Rodriguez will produce a new big-screen adventure featuring the flame-haired comic-book vixen, to be played by McGowan, for a release in 2010.

Någon som kommer ihåg 80-talsversionen med Brigitte Nielsen och Arnold som kluckade rätt fågelaktigt? Rodriguez har jag ju förtroende för, han kanske kan få rätt mängd charm (och blod) för att göra det intressant.

Japp. Har till och med filmen på både VHS och DVD faktiskt. Personligen är jag mer road av Red Sonja än av Conan... men det kan ju vara min pasion för Xena som talar. Skall bli intressant och se resultatet.

BTW, tror du detta kan slås ihop med nyheten jag postade tidigare? Red Sonja Rider in på 2000-talet?

Har alltid haft svårt för Red Sonja men som Fiskrens skriver så har även jag förtroende för Rodriguez och är intresserad av att se vad han kan erbjuda.

Hmm... kan kanske bli underhållande, men Rose McGowan är inte riktigt vad jag anser att Red Sonja ser ut som.

Lite som varför Kermit anser att Topher Grace inte är riktigt rätt som Peter Parker. Det är nåt som inte riktigt sitter rätt.

Rose McGowan är en rätt bra skådespelerska och snygg absolut men hon är väldigt liten, hon är typ 163 cm lång, och jag skulle föredra om Red Sonja skulle vara längre.

Har aldrig läst serien, men efter en googling på't så tycker jag det verkar vara en serie riktat till svultna tonårsgrabbar. Så en första tanke var väl "Pam Anderson"

Men Med rodriguez kan det nog bli intressant.
Sålänge han skippar att kroppsdelar försvinner och vapen tar dess plats på McGowan så..

Rodriguez producerar, McGowan har huvudrollen (inget nytt där) och regisseras av Douglas Aarniokoski. De verkar mer eller mindre strunta i 80-talsversionen och går direkt på Howards berättelser.

Det är nog snarare Roy thomas berättelser dom menar, för Robert E Howard skrev bara en enda Red SonYa -kortnovell, och den utspelades på 1700-talet i Ryssland om jag inte minns fel.

Red Sonja utspelar sig under Conan's tidsålder, den hyperboriska eran, och är en barbar-historia snarare pga detta.
Säkert flera som vet det, men jag tänkte bara klargöra att Red Sonja som hon ser ut idag är ett rent Marvel Comics -påhitt, men eftersom det gjordes till Conan så har dom inga rättigheter på det.

Förhoppningsvis blir denna version bättre.

Apparently, Hollywood (and all watching) cheered too soon -- a representative for Rose McGowan has hit back at the reports that she has split with Robert Rodriguez, or scrapped their movies. McGowan's rep told People Magazine that "the production of all three films is moving forward with Rose to star." And one of those mysterious sources "close" to the actress insisted their relationship was fine. (Källa)

There are rumors that director Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) and his girlfriend Rose McGowan (Grindhouse) have split, but apparently they will re-unite at Comic-Con this Thursday for a panel and Q&A session. The panel will discuss the upcoming "Red Sonja" movie and if you will be attending the event, stop by Room 6CDEF on July 24th from 2pm-3pm to check it out. Here is the official announcement:

Nu Image/Millennium Films is pleased to announce the return of RED SONJA to the big screen. The film will star Rose McGowan as the mythical flame-haired comic-book vixen with a sword, Red Sonja. The film is presented/produced by Robert Rodriguez and will be directed by Douglas Aarniokoski (Highlander: Endgame). The screenplay is written by David White (Undisputed II: Last Man Standing).

"Red Sonja" is based on a heroine created by Robert E. Howard and adapted for Marvel Comics by Roy Thomas. In her return we find Red Sonja, a young girl risen from the ashes of tragedy to become the most feared woman warrior of all time. The mythical red-head blindly seeks vengeance on those who destroyed her family. In her path of destruction she discovers a larger purpose for her unearthly powers: to save all Hyrkania from the villainous Kulan Gath.

"This is an amazing property and film for our company," says Nu Image/Millennium's Avi Lerner. "Working with the talented Robert Rodriguez, having Rose McGowan as Red Sonja and Douglas Aarniokoski directing is a fantastic combination. We could not be happier."

"It is our intent to take this opportunity to build on the worlds of branded entertainment with Red Sonja as well as Conan, Hercules and The Three Musketeers titles. There is history with these mythical heroes, and success," says Millennium's Boaz Davidson.

Production is set to begin in October of this year. Locations are being scouted in Michigan and throughout the United States. Additional casting is also being considered.

Midnight booty calls may be out of the question now that Rose McGown and Robert Rodriguez have called it quits, but apparently their most recently announced joint project, “Red Sonja”, is still going forward. Either that, or Rose McGowan is really, really going pretty far with this whole self-delusional stab at international stardom bit. In any case, besides the fact that a movie poster for the movie has shown up in Comic Con, there is also news that Rodriguez, originally slated to direct, will now only produce. The new director is one Douglas Aarniokoski, whose last movie was the miserably convoluted “Highlander: End Game”.

So anyways, two posters for the movie have appeared online. The first is from MTV, while the second one is from Yahoo! Movies.

Well, Rose has gotten the red hair part down. And in the second poster, there are some nice photoshopped in cleavage there, which is always important in a movie poster. The rest? Not so much. How is this girl even going to swing a broadsword, and do it convincingly?

Am I the only one smelling train wreck here?

Splash Page » ‘Red Sonja’ Director Teases Sequel, Possible Conan Cameo

With the upcoming “Red Sonja” film starring Rose McGowan hitting theaters next year, is it too early to start talking about a possible sequel? Not if you’re Splash Page!

Catching up with director Douglas Aarniokoski, we asked if there were any preliminary thoughts on any follow-ups or other films from the Red Sonja universe of characters, and while Aarniokoski obviously wouldn’t (or quite possibly, couldn’t) elaborate, he did drop some clues. “I mean, if we start to talk about that, I start to give away the third act,” he said. “Yes, let’s just say yes. It’s definitely got franchise written all over it.”

And in terms of silence speaking volumes, when pressed for possible Red Sonja films featuring the likes of Conan and Thulsa Doom, once again, Aarniokoski wouldn’t comment, but left the door open to speculation. “You know, again, I’d love to tell you but I can’t divulge that. It’s a little bit under wraps right now.”

...jag väntar nog på filmen innan jag börjar fantisera om 2an...

Men det är ju fint att de tänker positivt iaf.

Själv tycker jag det vore coolt med en uppföljare som kan Heta "Hyborian Age" eller så, och innehålla ett möte mellan Sonja, Conan, och Thulsa Doom.

Alla 3 har filmer på gång, som sagt.
