Tim Burton to direct Alice in Wonderland

Tim Burton's directing a film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Alice is the first book I ever read to myself and I've never fallen out of love with it. The Burton adaptation will feature live action and animation -- though it probably won't be half as weird as this Czech surrealist adaptation featuring taxidermied animal skeletons in stop-motion animation.

Burton will also produce the adaptation, which will use both live action and performance-capture animation.

"The stories are like drugs for children, you know?" Burton said. "It's like, 'Whoa, man.' The imagery, they've never quite nailed making it compelling as a full story. So I think it's an interesting challenge to direct."

Filming on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is set to begin in early 2008. Burton will work from a script by Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast)

Casting Rumor: Who is Alice in Tim Burton’s Wonderland?

Posted on Monday, July 7th, 2008 at 3:19 pm by: Peter Sciretta

Rumor has it that the lead role of Alice has been cast in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. The latest name to enter the rumor mill is Ryan Nikole Parker (pictured right), a virtual unknown with only a few television credits (One Life to Live, Kids Incorporated and American Idol).

Ain't It Cool - Tim Burton Finds An Alice To Send To Wonderland!!

Thursday, July 24, 2008

Mia Wasikowska will climb into Tim Burton's rabbit hole (wait, that doesn't sound right) as the title character in Burton & Disney's live-action, Digital 3-D adaptation of Alice In Wonderland. So says this article in The Hollywood Reporter.

Mia is an Australian actress with numerous credits, roughly half of them TV. You can find her official website here.

The film rolls in a few months for a targeted 2010 release. Burton's directing from a script by Lion King's Linda Woolverton.

iFMagazine.com: JOHNNY DEPP TO VISIT 'WONDERLAND'

LOCATION: Mad tea party

THE SKINNY: In a tidbit of delicious casting news, reports are swirling that Johnny Depp is set to don the famous Mad Hat for Tim Burton's upcoming ALICE IN WONDERLAND adaptation.

The Sun, among others, is pegging Depp as having signed on to work with Burton once again. The pair have previously collaborated on six films, including SWEENEY TODD and CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.

Recently, Australian actress Mia Wasikowska has been reported to be playing Alice. Production on ALICE IN WONDERLAND starts next year, with a summer 2010 release date planned.

"Var skall leven vara om inte i grytan?" :P Vad kommer här näst? Helena Bonham Carter som Drottningen? Eller kanske som the Cheshire Cat?

Burton & Disney's live-action

Johnny Depp som The Mad Hatter? Varför är jag inte förvånad? :P

Dread Central - Underworld Star Joins Burton's Alice in Wonderland

Wed, 10/01/2008

Michael Sheen, no relation to Charlie or Martin, has joined the cast of Tim Burton’s twisted re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland, according to this morning’s Variety.

To date, Sheen is best known to the mass market for his portrayal of Tony Blair in both The Queen and The Deal, and will next be seen as David Frost in Frost/Nixon. He’s best known to horror fans, however, as the Lycan Lucian, whom he’s played in all three Underworld films. No word on what role he’ll have in Alice, but I’m guessing it won’t be a key political figure or a werewolf.

/Film - Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonam Carter in Burton’s Wonderland

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter have joined the cast of Tim Burton’s 3D hybrid adaptation Alice in Wonderland. Carter is no surprise, as I believe she was already spotted on the UK set. Plus lets not forget that Helena is engaged to the director, and has been given roles, errr, I mean cast in everyone of Burton’s films since Planet of the Apes.

But the bigger surprise is Hathaway, who has been cast as the White Queen, an ally to Alice who has been banished by her sister, the Red Queen (played by… you guessed it, Helena Bonham Carter). You might remember the Red Queen from previous adaptations for the use of the catchphrase “Off with their heads!” No word on if the actresses will be featured as live-action or performance-captured/computer generated characters.

THR claims that in Burton’s adaptation, the White Queen needs Alice to slay the Bandersnatch, a fictional creature mentioned in Lewis Carroll’s poems Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark. The form and size of the creature is never revealed, although in Through the Looking-Glass, the White King snickers that Alice “runs so fearfully quick” that she “might as well try to catch a Bandersnatch!”

MTV Movies Blog » Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter Head to Tim Burton’s ‘Wonderland’

When Tim Burton announces a film project, there are rarely any surprises in the casting department. It’s more like a check-list that ends with Christopher Lee. But is there really anything wrong with that? Martin Scorsese does it all the time!

With that introduction, it will come as no surprise to you that Burton’s partner, Helena Bonham-Carter, has been added to the cast of Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” It probably won’t even shock you to find out what legendary Lewis Carroll character she’s playing — the Red Queen, fond of red roses, croquet matches, and shouting “Off with their heads!” But again, can we really complain, when Bonham-Carter plays ferocious and unhinged so well?

There is a newcomer to the Burton club, however. Anne Hathaway has also joined the cast as the White Queen, the kind and generous monarch who’s throne was usurped by her bloodthirsty Red sister. In Burton’s version, she sends Alice on a quest to hunt the Bandersnatch — a creature which appears only in Carroll’s poems “Jabberwocky” and “The Hunting of the Snark.” While Carroll purists will probably complain about Burton taking liberties, anyone who’s read the disconcerting narrative of “Alice in Wonderland” or “Through the Looking Glass” can hardly blame him.

I can’t say that Burton’s “Alice” is on my must see list (I’m just not a fan of the story) but with the cast he’s lined up, it’s bound to be fun. Aren’t you looking forward to seeing the soft-spoken Hathaway square off against a demented Bonham-Carter?

Roligast är ju helt klart första stycket. :)

First Showing - Tim Burton Speaks About His Goals for Alice in Wonderland

October 15, 2008
Source: Hero Complex

Posted Image

Ever since it was announced last November that Tim Burton was directing Alice in Wonderland, the filmmaker has never actually spoken publicly about his work on the film. Now that he's already officially in production on it, Burton has finally started talking about it, and Geoff Boucher of the Hero Complex was one of the first to speak with him. The lengthy in-depth interview, that I thoroughly enjoyed reading, eventually hones in on Alice in Wonderland after covering a wide range of topics, from Beetlejuice to Johnny Depp to Dark Shadows. And to jump right into it, let's kick this update off with Burton's goal for re-envisioning Alice in Wonderland: "just to try to give it a gravity that most film versions haven't had."

"It's a funny project. The story is obviously a classic with iconic images and ideas and thoughts. But with all the movie versions, well, I've just never seen one that really had any impact to me. It's always just a series of weird events. Every character is strange and she's just kind of wandering through all of the encounters as just a sort of observer. The goal is to try to make it an engaging movie where you get some of the psychology and kind of bring a freshness but also keep the classic nature of 'Alice.' And, you know, getting to do it in 3-D fits the material quite well. So I'm excited about making it a new version - but also have the elements that people expect when they think of the material."

The Hollywood Reporter - Crispin Glover joins Alice in Wonderland

Oct 24, 2008

Actor to play Knave of Hearts in Tim Burton's adaptation

Crispin Glover has signed on to play the Knave of Hearts in Tim Burton's adaptation of "Alice in Wonderland" for Disney.

Glover joins Mia Wasikowska as Alice and a cast that includes Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter. Burton is using a combination of live action and performance-capture technology to tell the Lewis Carroll story.

The APA-repped Glover is no stranger to performance-capture technology: He worked in the medium for "Beowulf."

In "Alice," the Knave of Hearts is put on trial for stealing the Queen of Hearts' tarts and is defended by Alice.

Is This Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter? - Cinematical

Posted Image

An image of Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland has arrived online via something called Fangirl Magazine, and my initial feelings are that it's a fake -- something some fan doctored-up in an attempt to have a little fun with the online community. Also, since Depp's Mad Hatter will most likely be presented to us in motion capture, this image (if real) would have to either be concept art or, perhaps, a painting of the character that may or may not show up in the background of a scene. It is quite creepy, though, the way he clutches that rabbit -- and so if this is fan made, kudos to its creator. That said, I'd expect the final version to have a little more color ... but it probably won't be too far off from this. Here are two real images from the set. What do you think?

Check out a larger version of the above image in the gallery below alongside a few other versions of the classic character for comparison.
